The Bible
Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them" (Book of Common Prayer, p. 236).
Holy Scripture is our foundation, understood through tradition and reason, containing all things necessary for salvation. Our worship is centered upon scripture, prayer, praise, and thanksgiving.
The Book of Common Prayer
"It is a most invaluable part of that blessed ‘liberty where with Christ hath made us free,’ that in his worship different forms and usages may without offence be allowed, provided the substance of the Faith be kept entire" (Book of Common Prayer, p. 9).
The Book of Common Prayer is a treasure chest full of devotional and teaching resources for individuals and congregations, but it is also the primary symbol of our unity. We, who are many and diverse, come together in Christ through our worship and our common prayer.
It is the oldest English-language liturgy in the world. It is usable by anyone, whether you are Baptist or Catholic or in between, you will find that it articulates the Christian faith in eloquent English style. But most importantly, the US version has no copyright.
The Hymnal 1982
It is one in a series of official hymnals of the Episcopal Church. The Episcopal Church requires that the words of hymns be from officially approved sources, making the official hymnals perhaps more important than their counterparts elsewhere. The Hymnal 1982 was put together based on the Joint Commission's work by the Standing Commission on Church Music. The Hymnal 1982 has a much expanded service music and chant section, which became necessary with the introduction of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.
The Hymnal 1982 provides a major section of Service Music for the Daily Office, the Great Litany, Proper Liturgies for Special Days, Baptism, Eucharist, and Canticles; Hymns for the Daily Office, the Church Year, Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Burial of the Dead, Ordination, Consecration of a Church, General Hymns (arranged by thematic categories such as "Praise to God," "Christian Vocation and Pilgrimage," and "The Church Triumphant"), the Christian Life, Rounds and Canons, and National Songs; The Hymnal 1982 includes 720 hymns.
Wonder, Love, and Praise
A supplement to The Hymnal 1982 is an assorted collection of two hundred hymns and spiritual songs, including a large selection of service music and devotional pieces. It is a valuable resource for worship, parish functions, and home use.
